The Sutcliffe Galleries owes its existence to the enterprise of its founding member, George Sutcliffe who, after a period of military service, decided on his return to civilian life to pursue a career in antiques trading.
In 1947, George began buying and selling paintings and acquired his first shop in Bradford – a prosperous city at that time, with a rich Victorian history.
In 1971, the Sutcliffe Galleries relocated to Harrogate, now with his son Gary as a partner and principal buyer, where it became established as one of the few provincial concerns of international repute, to specialise in the field of nineteenth century British and Continental paintings.
Following the death of his father in 1975, Gary carried out sole responsibility for the establishment and its future, until he was joined in 1976, by his wife Helen. Coming from a long established and well-respected family antique business in Harrogate, Helen had the experience to take over the running of the Harrogate Gallery. This left Gary free to travel extensively, especially to auction venues at home and abroad and to concentrate time in pursuit of his own area of expertise – the purchase of paintings.
The Gallery relocated again in 1990 to its’ present elegant Victorian premises in Royal Parade and expanded in 2005, with the opening a contemporary gallery in the heart of Harrogate’s exclusive Montpellier Quarter. Sutcliffe Galleries Contemporary is run and managed by daughter, Antonia. Having graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University with a degree in business, marketing and public relations, Antonia is a welcome addition to the Sutcliffe family business.
Son Jonathan joined the family team in 2011, after gaining first hand experience in the picture department of a leading London auction house. Based in London, he brings a breath of fresh air to the business, building and managing the new website, sourcing and researching paintings, taking Sutcliffe Galleries forward into the 21st century and securing its’ future.
The Sutcliffe Galleries was elected a member of the British Antique Dealers’ Association in 1978. Helen Sutcliffe was the Vice-Chairman 2006-2007 and the Association’s Northern Regional Representative 1996-2012.
